Hi-Fi 4 Sale Inaugural Member Gathering @ PJ!

Hi Everyone,
What do you think of the idea that we meet some place in PJ and we can have a listening session cum teh-tarik and equipment bazaar for a couple of hours on a Saturday?

We're looking for a suitable venue and one of the dealers in town has graciously offered their place as a meeting point. No strings attached. Just come & have fun, bring your gear and see who's interested. Of course, they will also have their promos as part of the plan to have something for everyone.

Think of the structure and see if we can come out with some ideas.
The general framework is as such:

Date: Let's say Sat, 21 Feb 2009
Venue: To be decided, somewhere in PJ/KL
Time: 1pm-7pm
What to bring: Some CDs, name cards & whatever you are thinking of selling (amps, CD players, speakers)
What you expect to see: Some used gear from fellow Hi-Fi 4 Sale members, some promos from the dealer and a few listening sessions (some from the dealer's products and if they are open to it, some of your gear)

Just be yourself, show mutual respect for one another and we should be having a good time.

Please reply with your feedback. Once we consolidate all suggestions (our apologies in advance if for some reason your suggestion(s) are not followed, we still value them), we will finalise the details and do a vote on how many of you plan to make it.

I used to have a have marantz amp&cdp few years back... good gears, no doubt especially for beginner and mid-end. but never stick to one brand bro!

Also have Leak, Sansui, Eico, Kenwood, Harman-Kardon.

Wow.. this is going to be fun. I must prepare myself so that will not get 'poisoned' easily by those nice equipments.

My suggestion- Get members to pay a nominal fee if plan to come. Money is for refreshments etc. Organizer will verify participants via e.g. their login name, to put a face to a name, so to speak.
Event should have a schedule, or not? Organizers should dictate how many sellers, what we plan to do etc.

No, we will not be collecting any nominal sum, at least not in the first outing. If you collect money, there will always be an expectation of an obligation(s), whatever it may be. Hi-Fi 4 Sale is not about obligations, it's about willingness, mutual respect & responsibility, in the spirit of a community and a forum.

Rather, instead of buying drinks, we can go for teh tarik or drinks at a nearby cafe. We can always split the bill, nothing to be shy about it.

One thing that we're still working out is how to control the flow of people & the security of goods. Having this gathering at a dealer is good because there's ready equipment for us to listen to and to try out some of our members' stuff (we can't promise that all equipment will be tested, so please bear with us).

However, the main concern is security, both for the members as well as for the dealer. With many people walking in & out, sometimes you do not know who is bringing things in and out of the premises (there will also be the usual customer walk-ins apart from us) and whether it's a case of pilferage or mistaken ownership/identity. Shops lose things once in a while. What more so, especially in a crowded environment. We also don't expect you to be carrying your equipment all the time, so...

Maybe a form to sign detailing the stuff you are bringing in and out will help, plus your name, UserID and contact details. If equipment exchanges hands, this will also help us manage the flow of items. Hi-Fi 4 Sale will not be receiving any commissions for deals done there. Also, in no way will Hi-Fi 4 Sale be liable for any damage or loss of goods during the gathering.

Hello, this is my first post to Hi-Fi 4 Sale forum.

I find it extremely interesting to know there is such an outing of HiFi fan. I heard about photography outing and karaoke get along as usual. Now we have even Hifi meet up. Very surprise and exciting!

By the way, I am interested to join the outing. Keep me posted.

• You can bring what you want to sell and the host, Hi-Way Laser is OK with it. We will be having some security measures during that day to safeguard equipment. However, it is on a best-effort basis and Hi-Fi 4 Sale or Hi-Way Laser cannot be held liable for any damage or loss.
  
• Teh tarik session more than welcome. Many places within walking distance. We can get to know one another, chit-chat and discuss things then.
  
• I've also asked Hi-Way Laser to have a special one-day promo for certain items with the support of at least 2 or 3 of their suppliers. Win-win-win situation for the buyer, Hi-Fi 4 Sale sellers as well as for Hi-Way Laser.

Many thanks to all of you for attending the 1st Hi-Fi 4 Sale Gathering at H-Way Laser on 21st Feb 2009. Hope everyone had fun meeting each other, putting a face to each username, listening to gear and trading stuff. There was certainly a very positive atmosphere, which we have always wanted to inculcate in Hi-Fi 4 Sale.

In any case, please forgive us for any shortcomings, as we were busy talking and pleasantly surprised by the turnout. The topic is still open for feedback, so that we can plan better for future gatherings. We'll probably do this 2-3 times a year, subject to the availability of other venues and time. With your help & support, we can make this better each time.

As we all know, the official address is now: www.hifi4sale.net. Please bookmark this site, as it's easy to remember and type into the address field. No more long addresses to key-in!

Thanks for organising the first hifi gathering and thanks to Hi-Way Laser to host the gathering, it's great to meet each other and gain/share knowledge between members.

Hope representative of hifi dealers (also members in hifi4sale) other than Hi-Way Laser, such as CMY, Audiomatic, Perfect Hifi, A&L, will join in the next gathering to share and exchange viewpoints among each members.

I also would suggest we should change/rotate venue for subsequent meetings, each hifi dealer take turn to be the host, what do you think?

Thank you for having taken the lead in organising the first gathering yesterday. It was good meeting so many folks and getting to hear about the latest thoughts and equipment in the audio world.

Thanks also to Kenny for graciously hosting the first meet. Auronthas's suggestion of requesting other dealers to participate and host future meetings is good.

Looking forward to the next meet whenever it is held!

Yes, we're hoping to get another venue for this. Time to think about it...

As what we experienced yesterday, 3 criteria must be met, namely
a) a suitably large venue
b) a place for teh-tarik nearby
c) some new form of knowledge which can be shared (eg. subjectvely quantifying yesterday's powerline noise @ Hi-Way Laser using the power noise sniffer in conjunction with the MIT Z Powerbar) while being there, not necessarily just a product pitch

Let's see how this goes...

I didn't get to meet many of those who gathered at hiway laser but from what I saw it would be good to continue with the informal sessions. I personally do not go for too much hardware as I do not change or upgrade equipment often ( expensive !) Maybe we can have focus groups for those with varied/different interests eg home theatre, hifi, music , movies.

Also can I suggest that we hold some of the sessions in members houses/ condos to see and hear the actual setups rather than all the highend equipment demoed in the dealers shops.

Suggestion for next gathering: (think too far )
1. may be we can take all-members group photo.
2. Demonstration of media servers and few CD/Blueray players, and compare them side by side.

On your second suggestion, if admin allows, i would like to bring my Mac, Squeezebox and wireless router to demonstrate network media player (NMP) with higher end system in the next gathering.

Perhaps, we can have someone bring external DAC (Benchmark, DacMagic, Bel Canto, etc.) with coaxial and/or toslink cable also.

The comparison will be as follow: -

a) Squeezebox (internal DAC) via analog output (RCA) to amplifier;

b) Squeezebox via digital output (coaxial) to external DAC then to amplifier;

c) Squeezebox via digital output (toslink/optical) to external DAC then to amplifier;

d) High end CD player (say Ayre CX-7e or equivalent) to amplifier


The above comparison test will be played with the same song (audio CD) and same uncompressed or lossless format.

I am curious how the sound difference will be ... before make up my mind to buy external DAC or higher end NMP (Logitech Transporter) or higher end CD player in my next upgrade.

I believe the comparison will be very interesting. I am also interested at your squeezebox and the wireless setup.

Perhaps I can add in some comparison items:

e) Laptop -> USB-Coaxial (digital) converter -> external DAC -> amp.

f) PC with decent sound card (eg: audiotrek prodigy) via digital output -> external DAC -> amp.
